By voting to convict Trump on one of his two charges of impeachment, Mitt Romney made history, even though he knew it would make him unpopular in Congress and across the country. “Were I to ignore the evidence that has been presented, and disregard what I believe my oath and the Constitution demands of me for the sake of a partisan end, it would, I fear, expose my character to history’s rebuke and the censure of my own conscience,” said Romney during a Senate floor speech, explaining the reasoning behind his vote.

Just hours later, during a live address from the White House, Trump doubled down on attacking Romney, calling him a “a failed presidential candidate” who used “religion as a crutch” for his vote, and told Utah’s other senator, Mike Lee, “Say hello to the people of Utah and tell them I’m sorry about Mitt Romney.”
Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Arizona Republican senator John McCain, said during Thursday’s episode of The View that while she likes “when anyone bucks a party,” she can’t “100% trust” Romney, and that he “is nothing like my dad!”
Nancy Pelosi, who also addressed the National Prayer Breakfast, called Trump’s comments on Romney “completely inappropriate.” And several notable conservative critics of Trump rallied to Romney’s defense, including Bill Kristol, Jonah Goldberg and Charles Sykes.
